Did some exploring with a friend from Pacific Northwest Back Road Adventures last Sunday.
For a while now we have both tried to visit Elk Lake in the Willamette NF, but snow kept us from making it, until this last trip. The road was rough and dusty minimizing the number of people. Nice little lake, beautiful views and access to hiking in the Opal Creek wilderness.
He had to head home early, so on the way back down I took French Creek road just past Detroit, then 2225 up to the top. Wonderful views up there and more access into the Opal Creek Wilderness. The map shows 2225 as a
dead end, I found what appears to be a connector to 2207 that isn’t on the map. It had some blow down that required a chain saw, so I decided to save it for another day. 2207 is a great backcountry route through the
Opal Creek recreation area. There are a number of waterfalls in the area; one is Sullivan Falls that is right next to the road.
